WPI-8 Hand-Nailed Roof Replacement

Owens Corning Duration Roofing System Built to Windstorm Certification Standards in Manvel, TX

Project Background

The Lewis family reached out to Ace Construction Services after multiple active leaks had developed throughout their home. The property still had its original 18-year-old roofing system, and years of Texas heat, storms, and wind exposure had pushed it well past the point of reliable performance. Missing shingles, failed step flashing, and deteriorated wall flashing were allowing water intrusion in several areas, and the damage had already reached interior finishes, wood trim, and siding.

The situation was complicated by one important requirement: because the home sits in a designated windstorm area, any new roofing system needed to be installed to strict WPI-8 windstorm certification standards. Most of the quotes the Lewis family received were based on pneumatic nail gun installation, which would not qualify for certification. They needed a company experienced enough to hand-nail the entire system correctly, handle the steepness and complexity of the roof, and manage the full project scope including interior repairs, wood trim, and siding.

Ace Construction Services worked closely with the Lewis family to design a complete roof installation focused on stopping the leaks permanently, meeting windstorm certification requirements, and fully restoring the appearance of the home.

“Rob and the Ace team were great. They replaced my roof and completed interior repairs caused by the roof issue. They addressed all of my concerns in a very timely manner.”

Roofing Issues Identified

Our inspection identified a range of conditions that confirmed the system needed full replacement, not another round of repairs:

  • Original 18-year-old roofing system at the end of its service life
  • Multiple active leaks throughout the home
  • Missing shingles across several roof sections
  • Missing step flashing and deteriorated wall flashing along the sides of the house
  • Interior damage from ongoing water intrusion
  • Damaged wood trim and siding requiring repair
  • Steep, complex roof design requiring experienced installers
  • WPI-8 windstorm certification required, ruling out pneumatic nail gun installation

Roofing System Installed

  • Owens Corning Duration shingles
  • Owens Corning RIZERidge cap system
  • GAF StormGuard Ice & Water Shield protection
  • Synthetic roofing underlayment
  • Bullet Boot TPE pipe boots at all pipe penetrations

// OUR WORK PROCESS

Why These Materials and Methods Were Chosen

The Lewis family needed more than a standard reroof. They needed a system installed to WPI-8 windstorm standards so the home could obtain its windstorm certificate, maintain proper insurance coverage, and qualify for a premium discount. Every decision on this project, from material selection to installation method, was made with that certification requirement in mind.

100% Hand-Nailed Installation to WPI-8 Standards

Every shingle on this project was hand-nailed. Hand-nailing allows precise nail placement and consistent fastening depth across the entire roof, both of which are required to pass the strict windstorm inspection that pneumatic nail gun installations often fail. This is the most time-intensive part of a WPI-8 project, and it's also the most important. Getting the certificate depends on it.

Owens Corning Duration® Shingles

Duration shingles were selected for their SureNail Technology, enhanced wind resistance, and proven long-term durability in Texas weather, all qualities that matter in a windstorm-designated area. The system was completed with the Owens Corning RIZERidge cap for a clean, dimensional finish and stronger protection along the ridge lines.

Radiant Barrier OSB Decking

Damaged decking was replaced with radiant barrier OSB, which includes a reflective foil layer that helps push heat away from the attic space during hot Texas summers. In a climate like Manvel's, attic temperatures can climb well past 130°F without it. The radiant barrier reduces that load, supporting energy efficiency and reducing long-term wear on the roofing system from below.

GAF StormGuard® Ice & Water Shield & Synthetic Underlayment

GAF StormGuard was installed in the areas most vulnerable to water intrusion — eaves, valleys, and penetration zones — providing a self-sealing waterproofing layer exactly where the Lewis home had been experiencing problems. Synthetic underlayment protected the remaining field of the roof, providing a durable secondary barrier beneath the shingles.

Bullet Boot TPE Pipe Boots

Every pipe penetration was upgraded with Bullet Boot TPE pipe boots, a long-life solution engineered to outlast the cracking and deterioration that causes traditional pipe flashings to fail. In Texas climates, constant UV exposure and temperature cycling accelerate that breakdown; the Bullet Boot design holds up significantly better over the long term.

New Step Flashing, Wall Flashing & Interior Repairs

New step flashing and wall flashing were installed along the sides of the home to permanently correct the water intrusion conditions that had been causing damage for years. Beyond the roof itself, Ace completed interior repairs, restored the damaged wood trim and siding, and stained the exterior wood. The driveway was power washed and the entire property was cleaned up at completion.

The Results

The Lewis family now has a fully upgraded, hand-nailed roofing system built to WPI-8 windstorm standards and positioned to obtain their windstorm certificate for proper insurance coverage and premium savings. The new Owens Corning Duration system, combined with radiant barrier decking, upgraded pipe boots, and corrected flashing throughout, addresses every failure point that had contributed to years of active leaks.

Beyond the roof, the completed interior repairs, restored wood trim and siding, and freshly stained exterior left the home looking sharp from the curb to the ridge line. The leaks are gone, the certificate path is clear, and the family has real peace of mind knowing the home is protected for the long term.
